Choosing a boat cover starts with checking what the boat cover is made of. Boat covers are made from a variety of materials, including polyester, acrylic, nylon, and cotton-polyester blends—each with its advantages and disadvantages.
Polyester is considered an excellent choice for boat cover construction due to its abrasion resistance, UV resistance, and water resistance; good breathability; long service life; and reasonable cost. This is the most commonly used cover material and you will notice that most boat covers are made of polyester.
The only boat cover material generally considered superior to polyester is acrylic. Made from acrylic, our premium Sunbrella canvas is the recognized gold standard for boat cover materials. Acrylic materials are known for their breathability and fade resistance. But it's also one of the most expensive.
Nylon and Blends
Can't expect them to last long as they have poor UV resistance and are extremely lightweight. The best boat covers are not made of these materials. You should be a little skeptical without first specifying whether the cover is made of polyester, acrylic, nylon, or a blend. When you see a boat cover that fits a 19-foot boat has a shipping weight of 3.5 pounds, that's a big clue that you're not buying a quality boat cover.
Another way that can help you choose a boat cover is that the details of quality are related to the weight of the fabric. When it comes to ruggedness and longevity, the higher the ounce number, the better protected your boat will be.
Terms such as "solution dyeing" and "pigment coating" will also provide insight into the quality of a boat cover. Solution dyed fibers are superior and highly preferred because this means that the fibers are dyed before being woven into cloth. This method allows color to travel all the way through the material and increases its resistance to fading and UV degradation. Pigment-coated materials, on the other hand, accept the color after the fabric is woven, which means the color is only surface level and does not penetrate fully into the fibers.
